The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India's premier central recruiting agency. It is responsible for appointments to and examinations for All India services and group A & group B of Central services. While Department of Personnel and Training is the central personnel agency in India. The commission is headquartered at Dholpur House, in New Delhi and functions through its own secretariat. The commission conducts various examinations such as Civil Services Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Medical Services Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, National Defence Academy Examination, Naval Academy Examination, Special Class Railway Apprentice, Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination, Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Examination, and Central Armed Police Forces(Assistant Commandant) Examination.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a competitive examination in India for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS). The preliminary examination consists of two objective-type papers: General Studies Paper 1 (GS1) and General Studies Paper 2 (GS2).
GS1 tests the candidate's knowledge of current events, history, geography, and economic and social development.
GS2 tests the candidate's aptitude, reasoning, and comprehension abilities.
The preliminary examination is a qualifying examination and the marks obtained in this stage are not counted for the final selection.

The mains examination consists of nine papers, two of which are qualifying in nature and seven are for merit ranking.
Paper A (Indian Language) and Paper B (English) are qualifying papers.
The remaining seven papers include one Essay paper, two papers on General Studies, and two papers on the candidate's chosen optional subject.
Interview:
Qualified candidates are called for an interview, which is conducted by the UPSC.
The interview is intended to test the candidate's suitability for a career in public service.
Overall the UPSC CSE is considered one of the toughest exams in India and requires a good amount of time and preparation.
UPSC CSE Preliminary Exam Pattern :-
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) preliminary exam consists of two objective-type papers:
Paper 1: General Studies 1 (GS1), covering Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World, and Society.
Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), which tests comprehension, logical reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving.
Both papers are worth 200 marks each and is held on the same day. Candidates are required to secure a minimum of 33% marks in Paper-2 (CSAT) in order to qualify for the main examination.
The duration of the exam is 2 hours for each paper.

UPSC CSE Preliminary Exam Syllabus:-
The UPSC CSE (Civil Services Examination) preliminary exam syllabus is divided into two papers:
Paper 1 (General Studies 1):
Current events of national and international importance
History of India and the Indian National Movement
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, and Economic Geography of India and the World
Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
Environmental ecology, biodiversity, and climate change - that do not require subject specialization.
Paper 2 (CSAT):
Comprehension
Interpersonal skills including communication skills
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision-making and problem-solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. - Class X level)

UPSC CSE Mains Exam Pattern
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) Mains exam has nine papers, all of which are compulsory. The pattern of the Mains exam is as follows:
1. Paper A: One Indian Language (300 marks) - Candidates are required to choose one Indian language from the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
2. Paper B: English (300 marks)
3. Paper I: Essay (250 marks)
4. Paper II: General Studies I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society) (250 marks)
5. Paper III: General Studies II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations) (250 marks)
6. Paper IV: General Studies III (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) (250 marks)
7. Paper V: General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude) (250 marks)
8. Paper VI: Optional Subject Paper 1 (250 marks)

Each paper is of 3 hours in duration. Candidates are required to choose one optional subject from a list of subjects provided by UPSC. The marks obtained in the optional papers will be counted towards the final score.
The UPSC CSE Mains Exam is a written test, in which all the papers are to be written in the medium or language the candidate has opted for in the Application Form, except for Paper B (English) and Paper A (Indian Language).

3. Government policies and interventions for development in various sectors and issues arising out of their design and implementation.
4. Development processes and the development industry- the role of NGOs, SHGs, various groups and associations, donors, charities, institutional and other stakeholders
5. Welfare schemes for vulnerable sections of the population by the Centre and States and the performance of these schemes; mechanisms, laws, institutions and Bodies constituted for the protection and betterment of these vulnerable sections.
6. Issues relating to the development and management of Social Sector/Services relating to Health, Education, and Human Resources.
7. Issues relating to poverty and hunger.
8. Role of civil services in a democracy.
Paper IV: General Studies III
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) Mains Paper 4, General Studies 3, covers the following topics:
1. Indian Economy and issues relating to planning, mobilization of resources, growth, development, and employment.
2. Inclusive growth and issues arising from it.
3. Government Budgeting.
4. Major crop cropping patterns in various parts of the country, different types of irrigation and irrigation systems storage, transport, and marketing of agricultural produce and issues and related constraints; e-technology in aid of farmers.
5. Food processing and related industries in India- scope and significance, location, upstream and downstream requirements, supply chain management.
6. Land reforms in India.
7. Effects of liberalization on the economy, changes in industrial policy, and their effects on industrial growth.
8. Infrastructure: Energy, Ports, Roads, Airports, Railways, etc.
9. Investment models.
10. Science and Technology- developments and their applications and effects in everyday life.
11. Disaster and disaster management.
12. Linkages between development and spread of extremism.
13. Role of external state and non-state actors in creating challenges to internal security.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) Mains paper 5, General Studies 4, covers the following topics:

Interview:-
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) includes a personality test, also known as the interview, as the final stage of the selection process. The interview is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and is designed to assess the candidate's suitability for a career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other civil services. The interview typically lasts for about 30-45 minutes and covers a wide range of topics such as the candidate's background, education, interests, and goals. The selection process for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS) through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) consists of three stages:
1. Preliminary Examination (also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT): This is a multiple choice objective test consisting of two papers: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). Candidates must clear the cut-off for each paper to be eligible for the next round.
2. Main Examination: This is a written test consisting of nine papers: two qualifying papers (language papers) and seven papers to be counted for ranking.
3. Interview or Personality Test: Candidates who clear the main exam are called for an interview with a panel of experts. The panel assesses the candidate's personality, leadership qualities, and general awareness.
Based on the performance in all three stages, UPSC prepares a final merit list. The candidates are allotted to various services (IAS, IPS, IFS, etc.) based on their ranks in the merit list and their preferences.
