What is NDA?
National Defence Academy (NDA) is a premier joint services training institute in India for men and women aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces. It is located in Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra and is the first tri-service academy in the world, where cadets of the Army, Navy, and Air Force are trained together before they go on to pre-commissioning training in their respective service academies. The objective of the NDA is to provide the cadets with a common curriculum and training, inculcating in them a sense of national unity and officer-like qualities.

Eligibility criteria
1. Age Limit: - The age limit for joining the National Defence Academy (NDA) in India is 16.5 to 19.5 years.
2. Educational Qualification: -
(i). For Army Wing: 12th class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
(ii). For Air Force and Naval Wings: 12th class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
Note: Candidates who are appearing in the 12th class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also appear for the NDA entrance examination.
3. Marital Status: - Only unmarried candidates are eligible to apply.
4. Nationality:- To join the National Defence Academy (NDA) in India, the candidate must be a citizen of India.
Physical Standard for NDA
The physical standards for admission to the National Defence Academy (NDA) in India include the following:
1. Height: 157 cm for Army and 162 cm for Air Force and Navy.
2. Chest: Minimum chest expansion of 5 cm.
3. Weight: Proportionate to height and age.
4. Physical fitness: Candidates must be physically fit and meet the medical standards set by the NDA.
Exam Pattern:-
The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam pattern in India consists of two stages:
1. Written Exam: It is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and consists of two papers, each of 2.5 hours duration:
Mathematics (300 marks)
General Ability Test (600 marks)
2. SSB Interview: The candidates who clear the written exam are then called for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview, which lasts for 5-6 days and assesses a candidate's leadership potential, communication skills, and other personal traits.
The final selection to the NDA is based on the candidate's performance in both the written exam and the SSB interview. The written exam is held twice a year, typically in April and September.

NDA Exam Syllabus
The syllabus for the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) covers a wide range of topics including:
1. Mathematics: Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry of Two and Three Dimensions, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability.
2. English: Vocabulary, Grammar and Usage, Comprehension and Composition.
3. General Knowledge: Current events of national and international importance, History of India and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography, Physical, Social and Economic Geography of India and the World, Environmental Ecology and Biodiversity, General Science, and Indian Polity and Governance.
4. Psychological Tests: The tests are designed to evaluate traits such as leadership, reasoning ability, initiative, determination, integrity, courage and balanced judgement.
The examination is conducted in two stages: written examination and a SSB (Services Selection Board) interview. The written examination consists of two papers: Mathematics and General Ability Test. The SSB interview assesses the candidates' personality and leadership qualities.
Marking Scheme
The marking scheme for the NDA exam is as follows:
Written Examination: The written examination consists of two papers:
Mathematics (300 marks)
General Ability Test (600 marks)
Total marks: The written examination is conducted for a total of 900 marks.
Negative marking: There is negative marking of 0.33 marks for each incorrect answer in the written examination.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and Medical Examination: The PFT and Medical Examination are qualifying in nature. The candidate needs to clear both of these to be eligible for admission to the NDA.
Final Selection: The final selection of the candidate is based on the combined scores of the written examination and PFT/Medical Examination.
Selection Process
The selection process of National Defence Academy (NDA) exam consists of the following steps:
1. Writing the NDA Exam: The first step is to write the NDA entrance examination, which is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
2. Clearing the Written Exam: The written exam consists of two papers: Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT). The candidate must clear both the papers to be eligible for the next stage of selection.
3. Interview and Intelligence Test: The candidates who clear the written exam are called for an interview and intelligence test at the Services Selection Board (SSB). This stage of selection is designed to assess the candidates' leadership qualities, communication skills, and overall personality.
4. Medical Examination: The candidates who clear the interview and intelligence test are then subjected to a medical examination to determine their physical and mental fitness.
5. Final Merit List: The final merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the written exam and the interview and intelligence test. The candidates who make it to the final merit list are eligible to join the National Defence Academy.
